The Malaysian Health Ministry has made an agreement with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSED) to allow Malaysian doctors to completely train in Malaysia to get a fellowship of the college.
The Ministry will assign accredited training centres, and the doctors will be trained by senior consultants base on modules and curriculum which is agree by the ministry and the college.
This will take affect next year and will start in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, followed by plastic surgery and orthopedic surgery.
Previously, Malaysian doctors have to train and take the exams in RCSED.
This new arrangement will allow more young doctors to specialise in these three specialisations, and eventually contribute to the number of specialists in these fields.
Every year, Malaysia trains 500 to 600 doctors to become specialist every year. More doctors who can specialise in cardiothoracic and hepatobiliary surgeries and other new infectious, lifestyle and chronic diseases are needed.
RCSED currently has some 22,000 fellows based in almost 100 countries worldwide. It recently launched its International School of Surgery.
